Visual Basic .NET is the most recent version of Microsoft's
language for creating Windows programs and developing Internet
applications. Visual Basic .NET forms part of the .NET Framework,
the development environment now used for all Microsoft programming
languages. Visual Basic .NET is an enhanced edition of this popular
language, incorporating all the functionality of Visual Basic 6 but
with the addition of new object oriented features. Some of the
terminology has changed in this new version of the product and the
development environment has been enhanced but the main principles
remain the same. Visual Basic .NET Made Simple is intended for new
programmers, as well as those who are upgrading from earlier
versions of Visual Basic and those who have worked in different
languages or environments and need to acquire new skills. No
previous knowledge of Visual Basic, other languages or object
oriented programming is required. However, readers are expected to
have a basic knowledge of Windows and its operation. Main topics
covered include: * Creating applications for Windows XP * Writing
and testing Visual Basic .NET code * Accessing external databases *
Developing Internet applications
Delphi is a Windows programming environment, which lets you create
self-contained, user friendly Windows applications in a very short
time. Your program's windows are 'drawn' on the screen, so that you
can always see exactly what the eventual application will look
like. This book is aimed at those who are new to programming, or
new to Delphi.
If you: * need to process information quickly and accurately * want
to produce professional looking reports and presentations * want to
produce spreadsheets, charts and graphs * need a self-teaching
approach then Excel 97 for Windows Made Simple is for you! By a
combination of tutorial approach, with tasks to do and easy steps,

Iconic drummer Stephen Morris presses play once more to the tune of
the long-awaited second volume of memoirs . . . Poised on the brink
of success, the dizzying heights of the unknown lying ahead, Ian
Curtis had taken his own life. Grieving yet determined, Stephen
Morris emerged from the wreckage of Joy Division to the dawn of
something new: a new band, a new tour, a new beginning. Under the
name New Order, Morris and his bandmates set their sights on
America, only to encounter new disasters. Yet, in true northern
spirit, not even this sudden tragedy could dissuade them from
following their haphazard path to greatness. Following the highs
and lows of New Order, Fast Forward tracks the changing rhythm of
Morris's life and the music that shaped it. From 'music
differences' to the ever-growing Joy Division legacy, music is the
constant beat through the verses of Fast Forward as Morris's
personal and professional life grew increasingly intertwined. This
came to a head when his girlfriend was invited to join the band.
Tentatively stepping into their testosterone-filled world, Gillian
was the right person at the right time for New Order. And for
Morris. What began as just a trial period in the band spun into a
whirlwind of new projects and experiences, including The Other Two
- a project born during one of New Order's (many) hiatuses.
Blending entertaining anecdote with profound reflection, Fast
Forward strips back a lifetime of fame and fortune to tell, with
raw honesty, how New Order threatened to implode time after time.
And yet, despite everything, the legacy of their music continued to
hold them together.
As legacy and other critical systems continue to migrate online,

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER 'A unique and thoughtful musical
memoir' Observer 'Gritty coming-of-age story . . . plenty of
anecdotes to keep us hooked, and his memories of Joy Division's Ian
Curtis are poignant' Daily Mirror Before he was responsible for
some of the most iconic drumming in popular music, Stephen Morris
grew up in 1960s and '70s industrial Macclesfield, on a quiet road
that led seemingly to nowhere. Far removed from the bright lights
and manic energy of nearby Manchester, he felt stifled by suburbia
and feared he might never escape. Then he joined Joy Division -
while they were still known as Warsaw - a pioneer of the rousing
post-punk sound that would revolutionise twentieth-century rock.
Following two landmark albums and widespread critical acclaim, Joy
Division were at the height of their powers and poised to break the
US, when lead singer, Ian Curtis, committed suicide. Part memoir,
part scrapbook and part aural history: Stephen Morris's innate
sense of rhythm and verve pulses through Record Play Pause. From
recollections of growing up in the North West to the founding of
New Order, Morris never strays far from the music. And by turns
profound and wry, this book subverts the mythology and allows us to
understand music's power to define who we are and what we become.
Stephen Morris has had a distinguished career, spanning nearly
forty years, as a pivotal member of Joy Division and New Order with
his trademark machine-like drumming. After the death of Joy
Division's singer, Ian Curtis, in 1980, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook,
Morris and his wife Gillian formed New Order, one of the most
critically acclaimed and influential bands of the late twentieth
century. New Order became the flagship band for Tony Wilson's
Factory Records and, alongside him, opened the infamous Hacienda
nightclub, the centre of the acid house movement. In 2015, after a
ten-year hiatus, New Order released Music Complete; which charted
at #2 in its first week of release (the band's highest position in
over twenty years). Stephen's book won't be that typical music
autobiography, which tends to be high on mischief and low on the
music. Part memoir, part visual scrapbook, part aural history, it
will be a hybrid memoir in Stephen's wry and witty voice. Stephen
will weave a dual narrative of growing up in the North West during
the 1970s with how the music actually works. It will also explore
what it is to be part of a mythologised band and the idea of what
you do becoming who you are.

Northamptonshire Archaeology, now MOLA Northampton, was
commissioned by Opportunity Peterborough (Peterborough City
Council) to undertake archaeological work ahead of an improvement
scheme centred on Cathedral Square, the historic centre of
Peterborough. The construction of two triangular arrays of
fountains in the central part of Cathedral Square formed the core
of the archaeological investigation, which was undertaken from
November 2008 to August 2011. The archaeological work identified a
succession of stone surfaces from the creation of the market square
in the 12th century through to the 19th century. The cobbled
surface of the original market square was overlaid by an
accumulation of dark organic silts, containing finds dating through
to the 16th century. At the start of the 15th century the parish
church of St John the Baptist was constructed over the western half
of the medieval market square with a cemetery immediately to the
west of the church. Following the closure of this cemetery by the
later 16th century, a small area of floor surfaces were the
probable remains of a building, perhaps the Sexton's house, at the
north end of Butchers Row. On the south side of the market square
there were the remains of a rectangular stone building, dated to
the late 15th to 17th centuries, perhaps containing shops. Between
this building and the church, a raised area of rubble was probably
a remnant of the plinth for the recorded market cross. The late
17th century saw the construction of the still extant Guildhall to
the east of the church. The raising of the ground level and
resurfacing of the square was probably contemporary with the
Guildhall. This would have involved the removal of all existing
buildings on the south side of the square, as well as the removal
of the market cross. In the late 18th or early 19th centuries the
square was again raised and resurfaced, now with pitched limestone.
Shallow gutters between the pavement and the road facilitated
drainage. A surface of granite sets of the 19th-century survived in
a few places below the late 20th-century slab pavement, which has
now been replaced by the fountain development.
From 17 trunks in a Lakeland attic comes this eyewitness account of
a soldier's life at a pivotal moment in the history of the British
Empire. Allan Marriot Hutchins, handsome, quick-witted and
adventurous, was one of thousands of young men from the shires who,
in 1900, volunteered to fight determined, well-armed Boers in a war
that foreshadowed the later carnage of the twentieth century,
fought with maxim guns, heavy artillery and bitter reprisals
against guerrillas and civilians. Allan served as a yeomanry
trooper in South Africa and later as a commissioned officer in
India where he distinguished himself in the Abor campaign to secure
the little-explored frontier between Assam and China. His letters
home and the letters he received from home and which still survive,
his diaries and thoughts paint a picture of both the man and the
wheels of history turning. 'He cannot write' said his schoolmaster
but Allan can write and his writing brings to life the hardships
and adventures of campaigning in hostile, alien terrain against an
often invisible enemy. He describes the same modest aspirations,
companionship and numbing routine encountered by today's front-line
soldiers.
Black Tea is a book about Russia that starts in London at the
height of the Cold War and ends on a beach in Crimea forty years
later. It takes those elements of the writer's life that were
forged into something new during the disruption and breakup of the
Soviet Union and its aftermath, to create a different kind of
memoir based on reflections, memory, and a narration that starts in
England and leads the reader on a journey through Russia from the
White Sea to the Caucasus. It tells two stories, one that begins in
suburban England in the 70s, and one that traces the course of a
love affair in Moscow twenty years later. They are narrated during
the course of a journey through Russia at the time of the
commemorations for the hundred-year anniversary of the revolution
in 2017. The book comes to terms with what has been described as
the central lacuna in twentieth-century thought - the tacit support
for communism by Western intellectuals. It describes the author's
father's support of Russia and his activism on behalf of nuclear
disarmament in the 1970s, and contrasts this with his grandmother's
stark warnings of the evils of socialism, and his own ambiguous
position growing up in the suburbs outside London, a position that
was for many years dominated, in spirit, by a huge military map of
the Soviet Union tacked to his bedroom wall. In the first section
of the book the author leaves England to visit his family in
Russia. They go on a camping trip to the White Sea, driving north
on the Archangel Road to the old labour camp on the island of
Solovki. The camping holiday comes to an end in the breakfast bar
of a chalet-hotel. And so begins an extended journey alone. Morris
drives back to Moscow, to the flat where he once lived and which is
now empty but still full of memories. He tells the story of the
August coup of 1991 and the October disturbances two years later,
of the tanks on the streets, the bombardment of the Russian
parliament building, and the partisan welcome I received during the
nights of troubles from those people who felt they were fighting
against the reactionary forces of repression. From Moscow he takes
a train south to the Caucasus. He reflects on the emotional end of
his own marriage and on the death of his father and grandmother.
Morris travels to Astrakhan, the failed final destination of
Hitler's sixth army who were desperate to reach the oil fields.
From Astrakhan he takes a bus to Elbrus, the highest peak in the
Caucasus and then continues on to Grozny, a destroyed city, now
rebuilt but still festering from its wounds. The final stage in the
journey takes him to Crimea, the scene of his own love-story, and
the destination over years of countless Russian and Soviet lovers
and would-be lovers, looking for happiness in the coves and
dark-sand beaches along the Black Sea coast. Highly informed with a
unique perspective, Black Tea chronicles the changing face of
Russia over his thirty years there. A reflection and a travelogue,
Steve Morris hauntingly explores love and identity, commitment and
family.
Magdalena, a bored secretary at Charles University in Prague, has
come to the aid of Fen'ka, a woman lynched by a mob for witchcraft
in 1356. Unknown to Magdalena, Fen'ka cursed the city as she died
and Magdalena has now unwittingly reawakened the curse and brought
to Prague both the Dearg-due (a voracious Irish female vampire-like
creature) and a dangerous Jesuit who, upon hearing of what
transpired with Fen'ka, develop their own nefarious agendas. To
access the enormous potential power to which Fen'ka holds the key,
they dupe Magdalena into helping destroy the city. A small group of
academics realize the danger facing Prague and struggle to keep one
step ahead of the Dearg-due and the Jesuit, hoping to send the
Dearg-due back to her grave.
